The warm, green southwest

The southwestern tip of Britain has the country´s warmest weather. There is a big prosperous port-Bristol. There is supersonic airliner and nearby Rolls Royce make aero engines. In old docks is first propellor-driven iron ship SS Great Britain. High above the River Avon is Clifton Suspension Bridge. Both ship and bridge was designed by Victorian engineer I.K.Brunel. There is Bath, town with natural hot spring, the only one in Britain. There are beautiful houses in Georgian style(Royal Crescent).There is wild country called moors. It Means bare hills with grey stone villages in the valleys. Moorlands consist of four areas: Dartmoor National Park, Exmoor, Bodmin Moor and Sedgemoor.

The prosperous south
The southeastern counties of England are the richest part of Britain because they are near the Continental Europe. Every day about half million people travel by train to work in London. They are called commuters. There is M4 corridor between London and Bristol. It is a centre of high-tech industry because companies need to be near motorway. There is Brighton. It is holiday resort because the sea bathing is good for the health. It was favourite health resort for King George IV. He built the Royal Pavilion here. There is the mystery of Stonehenge. It is circle of stones with altar in the middle on Salisbury plain. These stones were transported 200 miles from Wales more than 3500 years ago. No one knows who built Stonehenge or why.

Up north
There is Manchester known as Cottonpolis because he had large cotton mills. The goods that were made in Manchester and the North of England were exported through the port of Liverpool. This area still making cotton textiles but it is changing fast. One of new industries is the Nissan car factory near Sunderland. This factory makes 200 000 cars a year. The cars are sold throughout EC as British. There is Lake District in Cumbria. There are ten main Lakes, including Lake Windermere the largest in England. There is also nuclear plant at Sellafield.
