CLANS AND TARTANS

All true Scots belong to a clan, or tribe. Many names begin with Mac or Mc, which means son of. So the name McDonald means son of Donald. Each clan has its own tartan, a pattern used in the cloth of various kinds of kilt, Scotlands national costume. Green tartans were usually for hunting, and red for ceremonial wear.
HOGMANAY AND BURNS NIGHT
The Scots take their national celebrations seriously. The 31st December, called Hogmanay, is celebrated by groups of friends going from house to house, drinking a small glass of whiskey, in each.
Burns Nights Dinners are held on 25th January, celebratingh the birth of Scotlands greatest poet, Robert Burns. A haggis is ceremonially brought to the table accompanied by bagpipe music. Diners stick a dirk into the haggis while reciting poems by Burns.

WALES
The Welsh people are proud of their own culture and language. Many people go to the Wales on Holidays because there are lots of things to do:canal boating, pony trekking, canoeing, hiking. There are many splending castles( Harlech castle).Welsh accent is rhytmical, like a song. Rugby is national sport of Wales.



NORTHERN IRELAND
Northern Ireland or Ulster as it is often called,has six counties(Antrim,Armagh,Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone).The rest of the Island is Eire(Republic of Ireland).The people of Ireland have been struggling against English domination for over 800 years.In 1845 millions irish people died in famine when their potato crops failed.The english landlords did nothing to help.After famine a million irish people emigrated to America and Australia.Republic of Ireland(Eire) became independent in 1921,while N.Ireland with majority of protestants reminded part of UK.During last 20 years more then 2000 people died in Troubles.It is violence between protestants and extremist among catholics.The British Army prevent bombings by terorist groups(I.R.A.).Most people there would like a peaceful solution to the situation.
