The Heart of England

The centre of the heart of England is Birmingham, the second largest city in Britain. This Midlands is the place where the world’s Industrial Revolution began. Today, it is main industrial centre of England, making everything from screws to Jaguars. But there is also cultural centre. There are the best galleries, symphonic orchestra, ballet company and the biggest exhibition Motor Show in National Exhibition Centre(NEC).The second most-visited town(after London) is Stratfort -on-Avon. There is Shakespeare’s birthplace and his tomb. His plays are performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Oxford is the oldest university. University College is the oldest. Students are called undergraduates. They are taught individually by teachers called dons. The university’s Bodleian Library contains over three million books. Cambridge is almost as old as Oxford. King’s Cambridge Chapel is world-famous choir. Oxford and Cambridge have been always rivals. The Industrial Revolution began in Ironbridge. Abraham Darby discovered how to use coke(from coal rather than charcoal from coal) and the first iron bridge was built over the River Severn.
