50% of all American marriages end in divorce. Each state has its own divorce laws. For example in Idaho you can get a quick divorce. The divorce becomes final 20 days after you have filed for it. The wealthier partner (usually husband) pays the alimony ( alimenty, výživné ) to poorer one.
It’s difficult to decide, who gets the children. They usually live with their mother and their father visits them or they spent their vacation with his father. They can live with his father for two months and with their mother for another two months.
Death
American culture seems to downplay ( bagatelizuje ) or maybe ignore death. They don’t have a special day to visit the graves of his relatives and friends. They wear black only on the day of the funeral.
When a person dies, there is a period of 2 or 3 days when the family and friends meet at a funeral parlor ( pohřební síni ). They pray or just take one last look at the deceased ( zesnulý, nebožtík).
This is called a wake ( bdění nad zesnulým ). They tun it into farewell party ( poslední rozloučení ).
The funeral takes place one day after a wake. The majority prefers burials, although more and more people choose the cremation.
